Kittinger gained worldwide recognition on August 16, 1960, when he completed a record-breaking jump from the edge of space as part of the Air Force's Project Excelsior. From a height of 102,800 feet, Kittinger performed a free fall that lasted over four minutes before deploying his parachute. His achievement set world records for the highest parachute jump, the longest free-fall distance, and the fastest free fall, reaching speeds of 614 mph. These records stood for over 50 years, underscoring his contributions to aviation and space exploration.

Kittinger also served with distinction during the Vietnam War, flying combat missions as an Air Force fighter pilot. After being shot down and captured, he endured nearly a year as a prisoner of war in the infamous ""Hanoi Hilton"" prison camp.
