Fitzhugh L. ""Fitz"" Fulton Jr. was one of the most respected and accomplished test pilots in American aviation history. His career spanned more than four decades, during which he flew over 200 different types of aircraft and amassed more than 16,000 flight hours. Fulton is particularly noted for his work as a test pilot with NASA, the U.S. Air Force, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Fulton played a key role in the development of the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress and was the pilot for numerous high-profile missions, including launching the X-15 rocket plane and the testing of the Space Shuttle's approach and landing techniques. He was also the pilot during the maiden flight of the XB-70 Valkyrie and served as a chief test pilot during pivotal programs such as the U-2, SR-71, and Space Shuttle.
For his contributions to aviation, Fulton was awarded the Harmon Trophy and inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame. His work has left an indelible mark on both military and civilian aviation testing.
