James Alexander Goodson was born on March 21, 1921, in New York City but was raised in Toronto, Canada. After witnessing the Battle of Britain during a visit to England, Goodson was inspired to join the Royal Air Force (RAF). His dedication to the Allied cause saw him become one of the few Americans to fly with the RAF before the United States officially entered the war.
Later transferring to the U.S. Army Air Forces, Goodson joined the 4th Fighter Group of the 8th Air Force, famously known as ""The Mighty Eighth."" Flying iconic aircraft such as the Spitfire, P-47 Thunderbolt, and P-51 Mustang, Goodson became a renowned fighter pilot, credited with 15.5 aerial victories and numerous ground victories. His exceptional skill and leadership earned him the nickname ""King of the Strafers,"" reflecting his expertise in ground attack missions.
Goodson’s wartime career was not without peril. In June 1944, his P-51 Mustang was shot down over Germany, leading to his capture. He spent nearly a year as a prisoner of war before being liberated in April 1945. For his valor and service, Goodson received numerous decorations, including the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal.
