In the first half of the 19th century, three Aubert brothers David Louis, Henri Daniel, and Georges Constant founded Aubert Freres in Derriere-la-Cote, Switzerland. The brothers manufactured everything themselves until 1839, when they started giving jobs to local workmen. These men were paid by the piece. Before long, however, they were commissioning orders from renowned companies like Jules Jurgensen, Henry Audemars, and Golay Meylan. Eventually, they would in turn create complicated watches for the titans of today: Cartier, Patek Philippe, Vacheron & Constantin, and more. Aubert Freres won a First Class medal for its movements at the National Exhibition of Horology in La Chaux de Fonds in 1881. The company would play a pivotal role in helping the United States to enter the game of haute horology via a number of important patents. As recently as 1989, Aubert Freres was still in the same factory in Derriere-la-Cote. Today, the company continues what the Aubert brothers started more than a century ago.
