Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th president of the United States (1877–1881), had a lasting impact on American politics and society. His presidency marked the end of the Reconstruction era, as he withdrew federal troops from the South in exchange for securing the presidency in the controversial Compromise of 1877. While this helped restore order, it also allowed Southern states to implement discriminatory Jim Crow laws that disenfranchised Black citizens for decades. Hayes was a strong advocate for civil service reform, laying the groundwork for the eventual end of the spoils system. He also promoted education and economic development, particularly in the South, and worked to modernize the U.S. currency system. Though his presidency was limited to one term, his policies shaped the political landscape of the Gilded Age and influenced future discussions on civil rights and government accountability.
The cut includes an official Beckett Authentication Services hologram and matching LOA for authenticity purposes.
