On 16 July 1969, the mighty Saturn V's seven million pounds of thrust hurtled Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin ""Buzz"" Aldrin, and Michael Collins into space. Gene Kranz stood at the Mission Control Directors console four days later, when the lunar module set down on the Moon. His leadership played a key role in his generations greatest achievement, ""landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth."" In April 1970, the Apollo 13 Lunar Module docked with a damaged Command Service Module and carried Astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert back from near disaster in space. Against all odds, Gene Kranz led Mission Control's White Team in ensuring the astronauts' safe return. His leadership throughout the historic Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs played a key role in US manned exploration of space and the moon."
