Francis ""Gabby"" Gabreski – Legendary Fighter Ace

""Gabby"" Gabreski (1919–2002) was one of America’s most accomplished fighter pilots, achieving an extraordinary 34.5 confirmed aerial victories during World War II, making him the top U.S. Army Air Forces ace in the European Theater. Born to Polish immigrants in Pennsylvania, Gabreski was inspired to become a pilot after witnessing the rise of military aviation. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1940 and was later assigned to the 56th Fighter Group of the 8th Air Force, a unit known as ""Zemke’s Wolfpack.""
Flying the P-47 Thunderbolt, Gabreski became one of the war’s most skilled and aggressive pilots, excelling in air combat against the German Luftwaffe. His daring leadership and aerial prowess earned him the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, and multiple Distinguished Flying Crosses.
In July 1944, after achieving his 28th aerial victory, Gabreski was preparing to return home when he volunteered for one last mission. During a strafing run over enemy territory, his aircraft was damaged, forcing him to crash-land and become a prisoner of war. He spent the final months of the war in a German POW camp before being liberated in 1945.
Post-War and Korean War Service
Gabreski continued his distinguished military career in the newly formed U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War as a jet fighter ace. Flying the F-86 Sabre, he recorded six and a half additional aerial victories, making him one of the few pilots to achieve ace status in multiple wars. He retired as a colonel in 1967, leaving behind a legacy of bravery, skill, and leadership.
