Charlie Duke – Apollo 16 Lunar Module Pilot & Moonwalker
Brigadier General Charles Moss ""Charlie"" Duke Jr. (born October 3, 1935) is a retired U.S. Air Force officer, test pilot, and NASA astronaut best known as the Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 16, the fifth successful mission to land humans on the Moon. His role in NASA’s Apollo program and his legacy in space exploration have left an indelible mark on history.
Selected as a NASA astronaut in 1966, Duke first gained recognition as the CAPCOM (Capsule Communicator) for the Apollo 11 mission, famously responding to Neil Armstrong's historic first words on the Moon. Three years later, on April 20, 1972, Duke became the tenth person to walk on the Moon during the Apollo 16 mission, alongside mission commander John Young.
Duke and Young spent over 71 hours on the lunar surface in the Descartes Highlands, conducting extensive geological research, collecting over 200 pounds of lunar samples, and utilizing the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) to explore the Moon’s rugged terrain. Duke also famously left a photograph of his family on the lunar surface, which remains there to this day.
Legacy & Contributions to Space Exploration
After his Apollo 16 mission, Duke continued to serve in the U.S. Air Force, eventually retiring as a Brigadier General. He later became an entrepreneur, speaker, and advocate for space exploration, inspiring future generations with his experiences as a Moonwalker. His achievements earned him induction into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame and numerous prestigious awards, recognizing his role in advancing human spaceflight.
