Engaging in almost daily combat with enemy Japanese aircraft attempting to bomb and strafe American ground positions and surface forces, Captain Foss personally shot down 23 enemy planes and damaged others so severely that their destruction was extremely probable. In addition, during this period he successfully led several escort missions of American bombers and, on 15 November, engaged in an aerial fight against a superior number of enemy planes, shooting down three and severely damaging a fourth. His outstanding performance was an inspiration to his squadron and contributed materially to the success of our forces in the Solomon Islands.
