The coin is dated 1783 and is 27 grams of .903 fine silver. The front depicts Charles III bust and the date while the reverse depicts Pillars of Hercules and Spanish Coat of Arms. These coins were struck during the American Colonial era and were the first silver dollars used and accepted as legal tender in the American Colonies.
This Spanish colonial silver dollar became America's first monetary standard of value. Admired by America's Founding Fathers, it was recommended by Thomas Jefferson to be America's first silver dollar, and was adopted by the Contiental Congress. Today, this coin is recognized as the Silver Dollar of the American Revolution. Shops, markets and taverns in colonial America gladly accepted these hefty silver dollars for goods and services. But pherhaps their most important role was for the purchase of arms and supplies used by the fledgling American Army to help defeat the British.
After more than 200 years on the ocean floor, this hoard of Silver Dollars was recently recovered off the American coast. This rare discovery now gives you the opportunity to hold a genuine piece of Colonial-era history in your hand, and to imagine what imporant role these coins played in America's early years.
