Very rare authentic ancient Roman coin. The coin has been authenticated and encapsulated by NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation). Graded Ch VF.

Theodosius I, also known as Theodosius the Great, was Roman Emperor from AD 379 to AD 395. Theodosius was the last emperor to rule over both the eastern and the western halves of the Roman Empire.

Born in Spain in about 346, Theodosius was selected by Gratian to assume command of the army, was elevated to Eastern Emperor in 379, and assumed control of both East and West upon the death of his brother-in-law Valentinian II in 392. The last three years of his reign comprise the last time a single Emperor would rule both halves of the Roman Empire. He is a key figure in the history of the Roman Catholic Church, rooting out the last of the pagans and ending the Arian movement, both of which he considered heresies, and establishing Nicene Christianity as the official state religion. He is renowned for undergoing eight months of penance, as prescribed by St. Ambrose, to atone for his massacre of some 7,000 citizens of Thessalonica in 390. Certificate of Authenticity Dominate refers to the era of Roman history from the beginning of the Diocletian reforms in 284 through the fall of the Western Empire in 476, and derives from the form of address preferred by emperors during that period. This is a genuine ancient Roman bronze coin struck during the reign of Theodosius the Great. The obverse is a portrait of the Emperor. The various reverses feature mythological and military themes. W: 0.9-2.5 g| D: 10.5-16.2 mm
