In 1972-73 Robert Chase proposed the concept to Dali of picturing himself as the 20th century Leonardo da Vinci, giving the world what he imagined the future would hold. Knowing that Dali admired da Vinci greatly as a thinker and a creative genius, still, was not adequate preparation for his reaction. Dali rolled his eyes as indication of an extraordinary epiphany, and (please imagine an outrageous French-Catalan accent) he loudly exclaimed, "Fantastique! Bravo! Dal-i create the fu-ture.
Dali described Melting Space-Time:
A person will no longer wear a watch on the wrist. The roads upon which we travel will be full of such information. Computerized movable roads on which not only time but space will be summarized. Space and time will become a single continuum. They will blend in a soft, flexible new reality….as in the Salvador Dali famous soft watches. Perfect!
The Melting clock is the feature on the art. A Dali recognized image in many of his original works of art. Signifying, Dali’s diminishing road of Life. A Don Quixote character on his rearing horse, lance in hand, fighting Time in black printed etching portion on the center of the art.
Dali’s famous SOFT WATCHES
Dalí often said, "the materialization of time flexibility and indivisibility of space ... This is a fluid." The unexpected softness of the watch also represents the psychological aspect by which the speed of time, although accurate in its scientific definition, can greatly vary in human perception. The idea came to him after a meal while gazing at the remains of a runny Camembert.
The work of Salvador Dali (1904-1989) is associated with the surrealist movement of the 20th Century. A diverse and multi-talented artist, Dali is considered one of the most collected artists today, and his works offer an incredible opportunity for enormous appreciation in value. In addition to his original works, Dali produced works on paper for reproduction using dry point, etching, woodcut, and lithography. Many of his works are held in prestigious museums, private and public collections world-wide.
