In 1793 Large Cents earned a place in history by being the first coins ever minted by the United States Government on it's own equipment and premises. Minted from 1793 until 1857 by the Philadelphia Mint, the only U.S. Mint at the time.

In 1835 the Coronet cents were redesigned by the new Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht. The last major change to the appearance of the coin included changes made to the obverse side that gave Liberty a slimmer, and more youthful appearance. Minor tweaks continued through 1843, and the 1843 design was kept until the end of its mintage in 1857.
