Before Roberto Clemente graced our fields, the term "five tool player" was never needed. Clemente could do it all, on the field and at the plate. In his eighteen year career starting in 1955, Clemente was nothing short of amazing winning four batten titles, the 1966 MVP, the 1971 World Series MVP, was elected to twelve All0Star games, and won twelve straight Gold Glove awards from 1961-1972. This game used batting helmet dates back to Clemente's greatest seasons, late in the 1960's to the early 1970's. It was not a rarity for players to use a batting helmet for several seasons, which is clearly the case here. The inside bears Clemente's jersey number of "21" boldly written in black. The top front of the helmet proudly displays the Pirates "P" which is made of felt. This helmet is in great condition and has no alterations of any kind.
The helmet was previously offered through Historic Auctions in their June 2006 catalog. The catalog, as shown, will also be included with this lot. The piece also includes a Letter of Authenticity from Brad Wells, Head Authenticator of Expert Sports Authentication LLC.
