It was Williams' 21st Grand Slam singles title overall as she became the oldest woman in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam singles title. Although she would later lose in the U.S. Open, she spent the entire year ranked No. 1 for the second consecutive season. There were plenty of worthy recipients, but Williams was named Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year for her amazing efforts. She was just the third solo woman to earn the distinction, and first in more than 30 years.
