Prominently displayed across the front of the round is Morgan’s rendition of Lady Liberty. In Morgan’s portrayal, Liberty’s face is turned in profile with her hair is styled in loose curls. She is also depicted wearing a number of headpieces including a pileus, a wreath of laurel leaves and a headband bearing her name. Surrounding Liberty in a circular border is the phrase “E Pluribus Unum” along with the series of thirteen stars in honor of the thirteen original colonies. The only exception to Morgan’s original design is the omission of the coin’s mintage date.
While the front of the round attempts to preserve Morgan’s original artwork, the reverse side offers its own stylized version of the heraldic eagle, consisting of a winged shield. Beneath the shield sits the abbreviation of our nation’s name “USA,” while our nation’s flag waves proudly above it. The patriotic motif is further enhanced by the three stars to the left and right of the shield. Lastly, inscribed near the top and bottom edge of the round are its purity and weight respectively.
