American Gold Eagle coins are part of a larger American Eagle series that features silver and platinum versions as well. Each of the coins is the official bullion product of the United States in its particular precious metal. The gold and silver variants were introduced in 1986, making these 2016 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle coins the 30th annual production of the bullion coins.

The popularity of the fractional-weight coins in the American Gold Eagle bullion program has shifted over 30 years of production. Originally, the 1 oz coin was the most popular coin in the series, offering a popular weight among precious metal products and the impressive 22-karat gold purity.

By the time the coin series experienced its second major spike in demand, from 1996 to 1999, the 1/10 oz weight had become the most popular. While the torch continues to pass between the largest and smallest coin in the American Gold Eagle series, the 1/10 oz coin remains popular because it boasts the same purity with a more affordable price given its smaller weight.

On the obverse face of all American Gold Eagle coins is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 depiction of Lady Liberty. The image first appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle that same year, and was so popular that the coin is now referred to simply as the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle.

The reverse features a unique depiction created just for the American Gold Eagle. Sculptor Miley Busiek created an image that features a male bald eagle returning to the nest, where a group of hatchlings is closely guarded by a female.

It has a face value of $5 and is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
