Hank Aaron and Al Downing are forever linked in baseball history because Downing, a pitcher for the Dodgers, gave up Aaron’s 715th home run on April 8, 1974, breaking Babe Ruth’s record. Aaron, known for his power and resilience in the face of racial adversity, retired with 755 home runs. Downing, an All-Star and 20-game winner, never resented the moment, instead expressing admiration for Aaron’s achievement. Over the years, both men reflected on the milestone with mutual respect, with Downing acknowledging Aaron’s perseverance and Aaron never making Downing feel bad for being part of history.
