Pillar Dollar Coin from 1745. Please see scans regarding condition of the coin.

While the ugly cob was being struck the most glamorous coin in numismatic history had its origination. It has been called the Pillar Dollar, Piece of Eight and Eight Real. This coin, thanks to the pirates and Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" has been given a place in romantic fiction unequalled by any other coin. This "piece of eight" was used to make change in a rather primitive fashion. It was broken into two halves (each one four bits), or into four quarters (each one two bits).
