Before he became the Black Mamba that everyone knows him as today, we rewind to the 1999 NBA season where the Lakers were fresh off of being swept in the conference semi-finals to the eventual NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs. Using the defeat in the conference semi-finals from the previous year as fuel for the new season Bryant and the Lakers, now with Phil Jackson (HOF) at the helm, took the NBA by storm by capturing the number one seed in the west and having the best overall record in the NBA at 67-15. The Lakers retained the home court advantage throughout the entirety of the playoffs with a resume of beating the Sacramento Kings in 5 games, the Phoenix Suns in 5 games before knocking out the Portland Trailblazers in an epic series that went the distance of 7 games.

The Lakers advanced to their first Finals since the '91 season and were primed to win the first championship in the franchise's illustrious history since the 1988 campaign. The only thing that stood in their way was the legendary sharpshooter Reggie Miller and the Indiana Pacers who was coached by a similar sharpshooting legend in his own right, Larry Bird (Boston Celtics, HOF). Bryant showed the entire world what he later became famous for as we know today with his "Mamba Mentality" helping the Lakers close out the series in 6 games while recording a double-double in the clincher with 26 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks in what became the catalyst of the Lakers eventual 3-peat and the first of five NBA Finals championships for Bryant.
