Envelope has been hand signed by Satchel Paige (D. 1982, Cleveland Indians, HOF). Please see photos for further details regarding the envelope.

Satchel Paige was a legendary American baseball pitcher and one of the most prominent figures in the history of the Negro Leagues. He was born on July 7, 1906, in Mobile, Alabama, and his full name was Leroy Robert "Satchel" Paige.

Paige earned his nickname "Satchel" when he was a young boy, as he used to carry bags or satchels for passengers at the local railroad station. He began his professional baseball career in the 1920s, and throughout the 1930s and 1940s, he became one of the most dominant and popular players in the Negro Leagues. Paige had an exceptional fastball and a variety of other pitches, and he became known for his showmanship and charismatic personality both on and off the field.

The Negro Leagues were formed due to racial segregation in Major League Baseball, which barred African-American players from participating. Despite this discriminatory barrier, Paige showcased his exceptional talent during barnstorming tours and exhibition games against white Major League teams.

In 1948, at the age of 42, Satchel Paige finally got his chance to play in the Major Leagues when he signed with the Cleveland Indians. He became the oldest rookie in Major League history, and even at his advanced age, he showed remarkable skills and pitching prowess. Paige's presence in the Major Leagues helped pave the way for the integration of baseball, which saw more African-American players entering the league in the subsequent years.

Paige continued to play in the Major Leagues until 1953, and even after his official retirement, he returned to pitch occasionally. In 1971, he was the first player from the Negro Leagues to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, recognizing his significant contributions to the sport.

Satchel Paige's legacy extends beyond his on-field achievements. He was a trailblazer for African-American athletes and demonstrated that talent knows no color. His impact on baseball and civil rights continues to be celebrated, and he remains an enduring symbol of perseverance, talent, and courage. Satchel Paige passed away on June 8, 1982, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of baseball and beyond.
