Fractional currency, introduced by the United States Federal Government following the outbreak of the civil war, were in use from August 21, 1862 through February 15, 1876. Commonly referred to as shinplasters, were issued in 3, 5, 10, 25, and 50 cent denominations throughout 5 issuing periods.
The fifth issue of fractional currency issued from February 26, 1874 to February 15, 1876 in 10, 25 and 50 cent denominations. The fifth issue was the last issue of fractional currency and included changes such as color tinting in paper, and silk fibers.
