Susan B. Anthony dollar collection with (3) coins including 1 1979-P, 1 1980-D, and 1 1981-D.
The Susan B. Anthony dollar, minted from 1979 to 1981 and again in 1999, was the first U.S. coin to feature a real woman. Honoring women's suffrage leader Susan B. Anthony, the coin aimed to replace the dollar bill. Its design includes a portrait of Anthony on the obverse and an eagle landing on the moon, reminiscent of the Apollo 11 mission, on the reverse. Despite good intentions, the coin faced criticism due to its size and resemblance to the quarter, leading to public confusion. This, combined with limited acceptance by the public, resulted in low circulation. The Anthony dollar was eventually succeeded by the Sacagawea dollar in 2000. Nonetheless, the Susan B. Anthony dollar remains an important symbol of women's contributions to American history and a collectible item among numismatists.
