Benito Mussolini and King Victor Emmanuel III were central figures in Italy’s political landscape during the early 20th century. Mussolini, the leader of the National Fascist Party, rose to power in 1922 and established a totalitarian regime that reshaped Italian society and governance. King Victor Emmanuel III, who reigned from 1900 to 1946, initially played a constitutional role but became increasingly influential in the political sphere. In 1922, he appointed Mussolini as Prime Minister, believing he could stabilize the country amid political turmoil. This decision marked the beginning of fascist rule in Italy. Over time, Mussolini's regime grew more dictatorial, and despite initial support from the monarchy, the relationship between Mussolini and Victor Emmanuel III deteriorated, culminating in Mussolini’s ouster and arrest in 1943.
