William Allen appointment document from September 2, 1859 measures 13" x 17" in size and has been hand-signed by James Buchanan (D. 1868). Please note there is damage to the document.
James Buchanan (1791-1868) was the 15th President of the United States, serving from 1857 to 1861. Born in Pennsylvania, he was the only president to remain a lifelong bachelor. Before his presidency, Buchanan held various government roles, including Congressman, Senator, Secretary of State, and Minister to the United Kingdom. His presidency was marked by increasing tensions between the North and South over slavery. Buchanan believed that the issue should be decided by states and territories, which led to criticism that he failed to address the nation's growing division. His inability to prevent the secession of Southern states contributed to his legacy as one of the least effective presidents in American history.
The autograph(s) includes an official James Spence Authentication (JSA) hologram and matching LOA for authenticity purposes.
