**Biography of John Young:**

**John Watts Young** (1930–2018) was one of NASA's most accomplished astronauts and a pioneering figure in space exploration. A veteran of **six spaceflights** over the course of his career, Young flew in three different NASA programs: **Gemini**, **Apollo**, and the **Space Shuttle**, making him the first person to fly into space six times and the ninth human to walk on the Moon.

As **Commander of Apollo 16**, Young led NASA's **fifth crewed lunar landing mission**, which launched on **April 16, 1972**. On **April 21, 1972**, he became the **ninth person to set foot on the Moon**, exploring the Descartes Highlands and conducting various scientific experiments. Young and lunar module pilot Charles Duke spent over **71 hours** on the lunar surface, collecting geological samples and deploying scientific instruments that greatly enhanced our understanding of the Moon.

Prior to Apollo 16, Young flew on **Gemini 3**—NASA's first two-person space mission—and served as command module pilot on **Apollo 10**, the ""dress rehearsal"" for the first lunar landing.
