As a member of the elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR), also known as the ""Night Stalkers,"" Durant piloted a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter that was shot down during the mission, which would later be immortalized in the book and film *Black Hawk Down*.

After his helicopter crash, Durant was captured by Somali militia forces and held as a prisoner of war for 11 days, during which he endured severe injuries. His resilience and bravery under these conditions became a symbol of courage and perseverance for military personnel and civilians alike.
