Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Jefferson was a highly respected fighter pilot who served with the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American military aviators in the U.S. Armed Forces. Born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1921, Jefferson graduated with a chemistry degree before entering military service during World War II. In 1943, he trained as a fighter pilot and became part of the 332nd Fighter Group, known for their distinctive red-tailed P-51 Mustangs.

Flying numerous escort missions over Europe, Jefferson protected Allied bombers, proving the skill and bravery of the Tuskegee Airmen. On his 19th mission, Jefferson’s plane was shot down, and he was captured, spending the remainder of the war as a POW in Germany. After his liberation, he continued his military career, eventually retiring as a lieutenant colonel.

In addition to his military service, Jefferson was a lifelong advocate for civil rights and education. He authored his memoir, *Red Tail Captured, Red Tail Free*, detailing his experiences as a fighter pilot and prisoner of war.
