This original government document, dated March 21st 1870, measures 15.5" x 19.5" in size and has been hand-signed by Ulysses S. Grant (D. 1885).
Ulysses S. Grant was a prominent figure in American history, known primarily for his military leadership during the American Civil War and his subsequent role as the 18th President of the United States.
Grant served in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) under General Zachary Taylor and General Winfield Scott. His experiences during this conflict would later prove valuable in the Civil War.
When the American Civil War erupted in 1861, Grant joined the Union Army. He rapidly rose through the ranks due to his military acumen and ability to win battles. Grant is perhaps best known for his leadership during the Vicksburg Campaign, which culminated in the surrender of Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1863, a crucial turning point in the war. He was also known for his determination and the policy of "unconditional surrender" in his campaigns.
In March 1864, President Abraham Lincoln appointed Grant as the commander of all Union armies. Grant's aggressive strategy and dogged pursuit of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, led by General Robert E. Lee, played a critical role in the ultimate victory of the Union in 1865.
The Civil War effectively ended when General Lee surrendered to General Grant at the Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Grant's generous surrender terms helped to facilitate the reunification of the nation.
After the Civil War, Grant entered politics and was elected as the 18th President of the United States, serving two terms from 1869 to 1877. His presidency was marked by efforts to promote civil rights for African Americans and Reconstruction policies in the South. However, his administration faced significant challenges, including political scandals.
Ulysses S. Grant died of throat cancer on July 23, 1885.
Grant is remembered as a key figure in American history for his role in preserving the Union during the Civil War and for his presidency during a tumultuous period of reconstruction. His leadership and contributions to the nation's history are widely recognized and studied to this day.
